Answering service for Adelaide accountants, on Adelaide time
By the Ripper Receptionist Team
Last updated: 15 October 2026
Picture this. It's a made-up practice, but you'll know the type. Two partners and a part-time admin above a shopfront in the eastern suburbs. It's Thursday 29 October 2026. Quarterly BAS was due yesterday. Half the bookkeepers you normally lean on are in town at the ICB Australian Bookkeepers Summit, which runs on 29 and 30 October at the Adelaide Convention Centre (The Firm: ICB Australian Bookkeepers Summit 2026).
The phone goes at 8.31. It's a client in Melbourne who reckons nine o'clock is a decent hour to ring. In Melbourne, it is. Your admin starts at nine and you're still hunting for a park. At 5.15 a Sydney client calls, just off work at quarter to six their time. At 5.40, while you're in with a client, a Brisbane café owner tries you at what he thinks is ten past five. Nobody picks up. Three calls, all at sensible hours in the caller's city.
They didn't do anything wrong. Their clock just isn't yours.
An answering service for accountants in Adelaide picks up your 08 number when you can't, whatever time it is where the caller sits. Mia, the AI receptionist we build at RipperReceptionist, answers in your practice's name, works out who's calling and what they need, and either books a consultation or emails you the details straight away. She doesn't give tax advice. And she won't let a caller read a TFN into a note.
Running a practice on South Australian time
South Australia is on Australian Central Standard Time (UTC +9.5) from April to the end of September, and Central Daylight Time (UTC +10.5) from October to March (Tourism Australia: Time zones; Naracoorte Lucindale Council: Time zone). New South Wales, Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the ACT all move their clocks on the same first Sunday in October and back on the first Sunday in April. So Adelaide sits half an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne all year round. Queensland doesn't do daylight saving at all, which means you're half an hour behind Brisbane in winter and half an hour ahead of it from October to March.
If every client you have lives in SA, that's trivia. Most Adelaide practices aren't like that. There's the son who moved to Melbourne for work and kept his old accountant. The builder with a second crew in Sydney. The retired couple who winter in Queensland. Each of them rings on their own clock, and their working day starts and stops at a different minute to yours.
Then there's the number itself. Under the national numbering plan, (08) is the area code for South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and parts of western New South Wales (Telecommunications Numbering Plan 2025, Schedule 1, Part 4). Your 08 number is on your letterhead, your Google listing and probably a fridge magnet or two. You shouldn't have to change it to get the phone answered.
The days you're shut and the phone isn't
SA has a couple of public holidays nobody else shares. Adelaide Cup Day fell on Monday 9 March in 2026, a normal working day in New South Wales (Fair Work Ombudsman: 2026 public holidays). The next one is Monday 8 March 2027. Proclamation Day is ours alone too. In 2026 it falls on Saturday 26 December, with an extra public holiday on Monday 28 December (SafeWork SA: Public holidays). Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are part-day public holidays here, from 7pm to midnight.
Your office is closed on those days. The calls aren't. A Sydney client with a question on Adelaide Cup Day has no idea you're at home. Someone who opens an ATO letter in the week between Christmas and New Year still wants to know who's going to help them with it.
October, the 28th and the 31st
The national dates hit Adelaide the same as everywhere else. Quarterly BAS is due 28 October, 28 February, 28 April and 28 July. Monthly BAS is due on the 21st of the month after the period. Lodge through a registered tax or BAS agent and you may get extra time (ATO: Due dates for lodging and paying your BAS).
October has a second wave. The ATO tells people who are using a tax agent for the first time, or switching, that "you should contact them before 31 October to be part of their lodgment program" (ATO: Lodge your tax return with a registered tax agent). So the last fortnight of October brings strangers, ringing to ask whether you'll take them on in time.
They've got options. The ABS counted 1,868 accounting services businesses operating in South Australia at June 2025, and only 41 of them employed 20 or more people (ABS: Counts of Australian Businesses, June 2021 to June 2025, Data cube 2). That's a lot of small practices like the one on our made-up Thursday. If a new caller can't get you, the next name is one search away.
What Mia does with those calls
Mia is built in Adelaide. Here's what she does today, and nothing she doesn't.
She answers 24/7, and she answers every call, however many come in at once. The Melbourne client at 8.31 and the Brisbane one at 5.40 both get a voice, not a ring-out. Every call opens with your practice's name and a recording disclosure.
She understands how your callers talk. Her speech recognition is tuned for BAS, SMSF, ATO, PAYG and lodgement. While the caller is still speaking, she's filling in the enquiry: their name (spelled back if it's unclear, never guessed), their number, what they need and how urgent it is.
She works on your clock. Mia can book a consultation into your RipperReceptionist calendar, checked against your hours and existing bookings, and "Thursday at ten" becomes a real date in your practice's own time zone. If that slot's taken, she offers another. If the caller would rather you rang them, she schedules a callback.
She doesn't give your work away. "Is it deductible?" gets a consultation in the diary, not an answer on the phone, because that answer is what you bill for. If someone starts reading out their TFN, she stops them before it lands in any note. She knows the season as well: BAS quarters, individual return deadlines and monthly IAS dates are on her calendar. Dates are logistics to her, never advice.
When the call ends, the details land in your inbox and on your dashboard. The full transcript and an AI summary wait on the call's page, so you know the story before you ring back. If something really can't wait, you set rules from the dashboard and Mia transfers urgent callers to your mobile.
There's a money side too. Mia chases the invoice by email and then SMS, so you don't have to. Invoices and contacts export in Xero's import format today; native Xero sync is on the roadmap.
More detail is on the AI receptionist for accountants page. Plans are on the pricing page. Every plan has a 14-day refund, and you only pay for the minutes you use. Curious what missed calls might be costing you? Put your own numbers into the missed call calculator.
Keeping your 08 number
You don't change a thing on your letterhead. Sign up, paste your website so Mia learns your services and hours, and set her rules: hours, messages and what to capture. Then forward your existing number to Mia. In the dashboard, Settings then Forwarding shows the code for your carrier with your Mia number already filled in. Ring your own number from another phone. Mia answers.
Want out? Dial ##002# and all forwarding is cancelled, straight away. The help page has the codes for Telstra, Optus and Vodafone mobiles and Telstra landlines, plus what to do for other landlines and 1300 numbers. Setup takes about five minutes.
Before any of that, you can just hear her. Ring the demo line on +61 2 4072 7246 and ask her something you'd never want a receptionist to answer.
So, back to that Thursday. The Melbourne client at 8.31 gets a callback booked. The Brisbane café owner at 5.40 gets a consultation next week. The Sydney client at 5.15 has their details taken. Three emails land in your inbox and you read them in the car park.
Still weighing it up? We've put voicemail, your mobile, a human service and AI side by side in the best answering service for accountants in Australia, including where Mia isn't the right fit. Set up Mia for your Adelaide practice
Questions Adelaide accountants ask
Is there an answering service for accountants in Adelaide that works 24/7?
Yes. Mia, the AI receptionist from RipperReceptionist, answers your practice's calls 24/7 in your practice's name. She's built in Adelaide.
Is Mia a virtual receptionist?
She's an AI virtual receptionist. Software answers your phone, not a person in a call centre. She answers every call, captures who's calling and why, and books a consultation or a callback.
Can I keep my 08 number?
Yes. You forward your existing number to Mia with your carrier's code, and clients keep ringing the number they know. Dial ##002# to cancel all forwarding.
Does Mia book on Adelaide time?
Yes. When she books a consultation, "Thursday at ten" becomes a real date in your practice's own time zone, checked against your hours and existing bookings.
Does Mia answer on Adelaide Cup Day and over Christmas?
She answers 24/7, public holidays included. The details of each call land in your inbox and on your dashboard.
Will Mia give tax advice or take a TFN?
No. "Is it deductible?" becomes a booked consultation. If a caller starts reading out a TFN, she stops them before it lands in any note.
